Chattanooga: Fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash ruled accident

Chattanooga police have ruled that the pedestrian-vehicle crash that killed a 21-year-old Wednesday was an accident.

Sgt. Jerri Weary, police spokeswoman, identified the victim as 21-year-old Brice Nathaniel Stewart. He was apparently trying to cross Gunbarrel Road near Igou Gap Road, but there was no crosswalk at that location, Sgt. Weary said.

According to witnesses, Mr. Stewart began to cross Gunbarrel Road near the Chili’s restaurant. One vehicle slowed for Mr. Stewart when the driver noticed him trying to cross. Another vehicle approaching in an adjacent lane could not see Mr. Stewart as he darted out into traffic, the sergeant said.

The vehicle struck Mr. Stewart head-on, she said. He was transported to Erlanger hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle.

So let me get this straight. My friend brice darted into traffic ? According to the driver of the vehicle stopped for him, a driver came out of a parking lot at about 40 miles per hour...I find this very disrespectful to my friend, and to his family that your putting it like its his fault. Should he be sorry for getting in the way of that careless driver ? Or sorry he was epileptic, and couldn't drive ? I'm confused here.

It doesn't sound like anyone's fault...just a horrible accident. I can't imagine the hurt that young man's family is feeling, nor would I want to be in the driver's position. There's no nice way to describe the accident.

I believe that if any automobile driver sees another car stopped or slowing down on any road, he/she should stop or slow down for the simple reason that there is a reason for the stoppage or slowdown. I am a friend of Brice and his brother and their family. This accident could have been prevented. How was it determined so quickly that this was an unfortunate accident? I trust that the driver in question pray for forgiveness and promise to drive more carefully in the future.
