about Clay Bennett...
The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

I see the Bidens got their morning paper.
(As a liberal it's not my job to kick the administration here, but those guys seem to be sleeping in this morning, and I thought I'd help out with the easy one)
Yesterday, I was at the store when an old friend approached me, hand extended. I shook it, then (half) jokingly thanked him for the flu.
Actually, I would think paper money has to be the easiest way to transmit germs imaginable. Those who want to remain healthy should only use plastic, then sign with their own clean pen and refuse the contaminated receipt. Wait by the door and pretend to search for your keys until someone else enters the store.
Leftover loose bills should be sent to me for disinfection and disposal, care of this newspaper. hahahaha
Great 'toon, Clay.
I think this one is a depiction of my wife. She's a bit of a germaphobe to begin with, so she needs very little encouragement to go all-out-neurotic.
Thank goodness this outbreak seems to be dying down, our she would have had me and the kids living in a bubble.
OllieH-
Are you saying is OK for me to come out of my house?
this outbreak break of swine flu ....which is about as dangerous as normal flu in the 21 st century, i have to believe the national media outlets wanted to run this and make a big deal out of it for a few reasons ...and all of these have happened before 1) slow news week ...so they had to make a sensation out of something 2) to shock and scare folks into watching every news cast (i.e. "say in your homes and keep watching us we will let you know when everything is ok 3) running this meant not having to run something that was bad about the president and/or a bill or law which will change the things we do .....as long as they have the swine flu they can claim " hey we had no clue because we were dealing with the great swine flu outbreak of 2009" .... it's sad but all of that has happened in the past and it has happened here ...we will all see in the months to come whatever it was
It's probably just those outer-space aliens who came to earth a few weeks ago, who realized the terrible economic conditions of the nations and the horrble care we earth people are taking of our planet, which, a few thousand years ago, they used as a prime, high-end vacation spot.
They probably decided the only way to recover it was to decimate our population and put those humans remaining, to rehabilitate our world, (If they could):-)
lol no, i'm not that crazy. i do however believe they will take any instance to not only keep scared people scared and to not deliver any news worth hear or seeing but also, to keep a "shinning star " as bright as they can ... so if there is a goof up ... "well we have to sideline this so we can make more room for the scare story " ...happens all the time
Five years ago two psychics were debating politics. The Democrat psychic said "I predict within five years we will have Democrats in charge of the House, Senate and Presidency". The other Republican psychic replied "when pigs fly! ". Well five years later the Democrats have won the House, Senate and Presidency and as predicted, Swine Flu.
Oh, EaTn,
Big groan! Loved it!
The bigger the groan....
Into every life a little 'flu must fall'. It couldn't have shown up at a better/worse (pick one) time for everyone involved. Of course, with the (idiotic) ill-timed fly-over, over New York City, the retirement of S.C.J Souter, and the defection of Arlen Spector, the media has had a field day. Any of the above-mentioned topics could have succeeded at toning down all the political rhetoric going into the president's 'First Summer' and I feel he'll need all the diversions he can get. Oh, by the way, Clara it's WOODY, with a "Y". Just think of, as long as I can ask 'why' there will always be an answer. Thank you for your time and attention, Woody
Woody,
I grovel in abject apology.
Most of my younger relatives all have nicknames ending in ie.
In fact when I started this note I found I had still typed in "ie" at the end of your name. Names are precious things if you like your name.
However, me by any other name is still me, I guess.
That bit of philosophy I don't think I understand myself.
Good point, Clarra!
Toonfan,
I've been called Clara, Cara, Claire, Cora, Cleo, Chloe, Carla,Carol, and perhaps a few others behind my back that weren't so complimentary. I got so I answered to anything faintly resembling this old-fashioned name. I once had the childish nickname of Corky. It got changed to Porky very quickly. Sigh!
And to get this blog back on track... no matter what I'm called, I can still be brought down by Swine Flu, or whatever.
I love your name, Clara. I was just having a bit of fun with you.
The politics of fear.
james and woody are right, IMO.
Toonfan,
You would conceive a dislike for it if, like me you were subjected to the sobriquet, Clara Belle Cow, which was the name of the highly publicized Bordon's advertisement back then, and the somewhat salacious reference to Clara Bow, and her screen remark, "Cum up'n see me sum time!
I soothed myself by looking up the meaning of the name.
Clarra
Clara- It looks as though your name is making a bit of a comeback.
It was at the height of its popularity in 1880, when it was the ninth most popular name for a girl. Over the next century, it took a big dive, falling to 550th most popular name by the 1980s.
BUT...
Since the beginning of the 1990s, your name has been making a comeback, climbing steadily every single year. By 2007, Clara was the 228th most popular name among girls.
A jump of 222 places in less than 30 years! Quite impressive. If the trend continues, Clara should be the most popular name among girls by the year 2040.
Where do you people find these statistics. Not only this one on names, but all the political ones I see posted here?
(Especially the ones from Rolando)
I can't believe this is my second post on this 'one' cartoon. However, Clara, call me what you will. It's nice to be thought of once in a while. And yet, when Rolando thinks I'm right I must have misstated something. But what I really want to know is where in the 'heck' did some of you grow up? Elsie was always the Borden's Cow. Elmer was her significant other (only because I am not sure how bovine matches are made.) Thank you, once again, for your time and attention, Woody (with a 'y' or an 'ie' or 'ee' or whatever)
Clara- I found the info on your name at this site: http://tinyurl.com/5s669m
The site gives the origin of names and what they mean, plus a name's popularity over the years. It even has nifty graphs.
As for rolando's arguments- I think you find most of his information either here: http://tinyurl.com/5dk36 or here: http://tinyurl.com/bs4v6
Toonfan, you scared me with the link when a photo of Rush appeared. I was ill for a moment. Just kidding. This is very funny, but I am not convinced that Rolando is as out there.
Count me in on Clara's link, with a little Texas for justice issues.
Woody,
I remember distinctly Elsie and Elmer, but wasn't that later? I vaguely remember a calf named Daisy later on but...
Then where in heck did Clara Belle Cow come from. I think I'll pay a visit to a psychiatrist.
This heckling started in the early 1930's.
In any case I stand corrected, and thank you for listening to my self-pity. At least no one beat me up.
Toonfan,
I, too, was startled by the links. Yup! Funny! Although early on he said that he didn't watch Rush either.
Oh well! I hope he hasn't caught Swine Flu. What a stimulus he is, and it drives me further and further left!
HELP!
I wondered about that too, woody. I had to read your post a couple-three times to make sure it said what it said.
Regardless, you are still right...everyone is right once in a while. Even a busted clock is right twice a day.
And Clara, what statistics did I post here, with or without cites?
Good Grief, woman! It was 2 sentences -- 10 words and an acronym!
Or are you being ornery just to be ornery?
Yeah, tunefan, you caught me. I write for Rush. He also calls me for tips and things. The secrt is out. Sigh.
Rolando,
Absolutely!
Have to go! We are having a thunderstorm!
