A Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office report exonerated a Soddy-Daisy police officer in connection with the death of a man 18 days after the officer used a stun gun on him.
The report found that Officer Melissa Daniels acted within the scope of her powers and in a proper manner when she used a Taser on Roger Redden on Jan. 4.
Soddy-Daisy officers responded to a domestic incident at 9921 Dayton Pike and found Mr. Redden naked, talking out of his head and breaking things, according to the report. When officers attempted to talk to him, he mumbled and did not make eye contact while stumbling around the room. Police called for an ambulance and tried to put a restrictive suit on Mr. Redden, but he refused.
Medics and police then attempted to hold Mr. Redden down to strap him to a stretcher to transport him to a hospital, but he became combative and would not follow officer commands, according to the report.
Officer Daniels then deployed her Taser seven times, stunning him in the left thigh/leg area, left upper arm and underneath his left arm, according to the report. Following the stuns, Mr. Redden remained combative and uncooperative. He then was handcuffed to the stretcher, according to the report.
The Medical Examiner’s Office in Knoxville ruled the death a natural event and listed the cause of death as multiple medical issues, mainly an undiagnosed fungus that caused his erratic behavior, according to the report.
“There is no evidence or witness statements that indicate that any member of the Soddy-Daisy Police Department or Emergency Medical Services used excessive force during this event,” according to the report.

The officer tried to shock the man 7 times - imagine getting that type of voltage running through your system just once or twice. How can that NOT be excessive force? Before the Taser, the man was just a naked medical case. The main issue, is that he's dead after the Taser.
Something is crazy here. A sick man is tased seven times by a woman cop to make him cooperate with emergency medical specialists who are attempting to put him on a stretcher. Shortly afterwards he goes into a coma and dies 18 days later, never coming out of the coma. Four months later the county cops issue a report exonerating the Soddy-Daisy cop of any wrong doing, and we read where the Medical Examiner’s Office in Knoxville has ruled the death a natural event caused by several medical problems, mainly a fungus that caused his erratic behavior. The real fungus that killed him is the willingness of the citizenry to allow the brutal and deadly use of the Taser gun by the cops on people instead of insisting that the cops be trained to subdue people in a less violent and dangerous manner. This same fungus contaminates the Medical Examiner’s office to the extent that they are willing to completely ignore the fact that a Taser gun was used on the man seven times shortly before he went into a coma. It’s a deadly fungus indeed that allows the police and the Medical Examiner’s office to write off these kinds of murders as death due to natural causes.
sounds like classic excited delirium...Taser is all but harmless in and of itself; it has NEVER been the cause of death of anyone...ever.
Those "non-lethal" weapons sure are racking up quite the body count.
McKelley, yes this guy died 18 days after Tasered, as thousanbds of people that died after breakfast or swimming. The SPECIALIST (not yours) are the good opinions. Make Pylosophy is free but w/o qualification is useless. By the way, the voltage does not run throuw the body is the current.
People can't handle the truth, oh well. Im sorry he passed away but the truth is right in front of you. If you choose not to believe it that's your problem. And there is no sense in arguing with the people who don't agree, they wouldn't be happy if they were there and witnessed it and knew that there was no wrong doing. You will never be able to please people. And if you don't have a member of your family that is a police officer, then you don't understand how much they put their lives on the line. But that's just it people don't care they don't look at that unless the police do something for them. And when something goes wrong or bad, they get on here and trash the officers, and they could careless if someone in their family gets on here and reads it. But the funny thing is, if one of the people involved in this was their family or if something happened and someone in their family was involved, they wouldn't want to see or hear people making such hurtful comments. You weren't there, I wasn't there, and everyone that has made a mean hurtful comment, was NOT there, so you don't know what really happened, and you can listen to stories all you want, but along the way stories twist and change, and keep getting things added and taken away. The only people who know what went down are the ones who were there. And they were cleared of any wrong doing. Now im sorry for those of you that didn't get your way, but it's time to move on and leave it alone. If the people involved did any wrong then they will answer to God for it, so don't worry about it. You judging them, and putting them down and everything else, you're gonna have to answer for that so just drop it, it's really not that hard.
It is amazibng how much the public does not know about police work or the equipment we use. Before we judge why our Law Enforcement Officers carry out their jobs or do their jobs why don't we investigate what really happened and what the equipment really does. I know for a fact the TASER does not produce enough AMPS to harm. It has about as much amperage as a Christmas tree light bulb. And remember, we as Law Enforcement Officers risk our lives every day so you can write comments like I have read about this case. You need to appreciate these men and women and stop making negative comments about something you obviously know nothing about. Yes, I am a Law Enforcement Officer, and I forgive you for your ignorance.
