Charles Austin

Charles “Bo” Austin, 73, of Hixson passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at a local hospital.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran and loved repairing bicycles. He was preceded in death by his son, Darrell Griffith; parents, Haskell and Dorothy Austin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, DeEtta Austin; son, Wyman Griffith; daughters, Sandy Smith, Angela Freeman; brothers, Robert Austin, Ricky Austin; sisters, Nadaine Austin, Helen Jenkins, Connie Smith; several grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Earnie Burfitt officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Frances Campbell, 75, of East Ridge, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at her residence.

Ervin Caudle

Ervin “Doc” Caudle, 84, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local hospital.

He retired from U.S. Pipe Foundry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wright Caudle Sr. and Aretta Caudle; brothers, Wright Caudle Jr., James Caudle, Carl Caudle; and sister, Eunice Leamon.

Survivors: brother, Marvin (Alice) Caudle, of Madison, Ala.; sisters, Joanna Jones, of Huntsville, Ala., Bernice (Charlie) Leamon, of Cleveland, Ohio, Dorothy (William) Rice, of Chattanooga and Earnestine Russell, of Huntsville, Ala.; sister-in-law, Hazel Caudle, of Limestone County, Ala.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral: Saturday at noon in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Harris Toney officiating.

Burial: Highland Memorial Gardens.

The body will lie in state today after noon at the funeral home.

Dorothy Chitty

Dorothy Chitty, 84, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Chitty was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Grace Killebrew, Mary Currington, Jean Chitty, Nancy Herring, Sarah Newson, Dorothy Chitty; sons, Elmer Chitty, Thomas Chitty; sister, Sally McMillian, Kassie McDonald; brother, Arthur Hutchins; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Jane Derthick

Jane Bailey Derthick, 73, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, after a courageous six year battle with cancer.

Jane’s funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, 650 McCallie Ave. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Rebello and the Rev. Aline Summerlin officiating.

A private burial will take place at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Family only present.

Visitation will be held at the Derthick’s residence, 602 Marr Drive, Signal Mountain from 4-7 p.m. today, Nov. 13.

Thelma Knox, 86, passed away in Chattanooga on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.

Jim Ledbetter

James “Jim” Fredrick Ledbetter, 89, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

He was the son of the late M.C. and Victoria Parton Ledbetter. Jim was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church, a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and was involved with the visitation ministry. He graduated from Central High in 1940 and attended the University of Chattanooga. Jim was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army-Air Force. He loved to run track in his earlier years and later in life began his woodworking hobby that continued for many years. Jim retired from Standard Appliance as Vice President and one of his greatest accomplishments was being a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Edith R. Ledbetter; son, Jim (Anne) Ledbetter Jr.; daughter, Sharon (Rick) Hutchens; grandchildren, Alan and Catherine Ledbetter; and a very special nephew, Charles Richardson.

Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Nov. 13, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors and the Rev. Genevieve DeHoog officiating.

Robert Nash

Robert “Sonnie” Nash, 70, died on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was born in Chattanooga, to the late Mr. Frank Cunningham Sr., and Mrs. Annie E. Nash-Bacon. Sonnie was employed by Mercury Cab Co. for many years until his passing, where he was also affectionately known as #46. He attended Howard High School and was a well-respected member within the Jefferson Street neighborhood. He was one of the founding members of the Jefferson Street Neighborhood Reunion committee. He attended the (Old) New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and Olivet Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Cunningham Sr. and Mrs. Annie E. Nash-Bacon; two sisters, Sabara Jean Nash, Detroit, Mich. and Toni Ann Carmichael, Talladega, Ala.; two brothers: Sygbee “Sid” Nash, Chattanooga and Frank Cunningham Jr., Detroit, Mich.; two nieces, Angel Nash and Satrina Nash, Detroit.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his children, Jennifer (James) Johnson, of Atlanta, Pamela (Cedric) Evans; Kimberly (Tommy) Favors, of McDonough, Vincent (Angela) Nash, Jonathan Nash and Tanea Nash, all of Chattanooga; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Cleveland Cunningham, of Talladega, Ala.; one uncle, Arthur Cunningham, of Detroit, Mich. One sister-in-law, Yong Hu (Sygbee) Nash, of Chattanooga; five nieces and two nephews; a very devoted friend, Mr. George Fletcher and long-time friend, Alonza “Lil Bro” Anderson.

Shirley Patterson

Shirley Anne Sprague Patterson passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

Born to John and Trula O’Dell Sprague on July 16, 1929, she was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her brother, John K. Sprague, of Decatur.

A graduate of Chattanooga Central High School, Shirley attended the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, after which she accepted a position as secretary at The McCallie School. After a few months there, she would meet the man, a teacher at McCallie, who would become her husband of 54 years, Craig Houston Patterson.

In 1970, Shirley took on a role as receptionist at Girls Preparatory School, where she soon became “the voice of GPS,” Still today, her familiar greetings echo in the minds of alumnae and friends in the GPS family. In 1986, she was named an Honorary Alumna of the school. Shirley retired in 1992.

Devoted to her community, she served as president of the Missionary Ridge School PTA and Missionary Ridge Garden Club. She was also a volunteer for Chattanooga Community Kitchen and CASA, as well as an active member of Central Presbyterian Church and Northside Presbyterian Church.

“Ms. Pat,” as she was known by the hundreds of McCallie boys she mothered, mentored and entertained during the decades she lived on the school’s campus, is survived by her husband, “Mr. Pat,” as well as daughters, Nancy P. McCullough, Nashville, Anne (Tom) Braly, Soddy-Daisy; She also leaves behind grandchildren she adored, Anne Rutherford McLachlan, Chattanooga, William Chandler McCullough, of Fort Collins, Colo., Frances Katharine McLachlan, of Point Reyes Station, Calif., Laing McCullough (Todd) Pewitt, of Nashville, Taylor Myers McLachlan, of Atlanta; sister, Charlotte (John) Berg, Chattanooga; brother, James (Bonnie) Sprague, Elon, N.C.; sister-in-law, Linda Sprague, Decatur, Tenn.; aunt, Mary Sprague Moore, of Hixson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Amedysis Hospice and the staff of Soddy-Daisy Healthcare for their expert care during Shirley’s short time there.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at noon in Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Sam Pope officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Frances LeVisa Price 84, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local health care facility.

John C. Stigall Sr., 58, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at a local hospital.

Marguerite Wilson

Marguerite Emma Wilson went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family. She was 85 years of age.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1924,

She was a lifelong resident of Soddy-Daisy, and the daughter of the late Floyd and Tilda Eustice Davis.

In her younger days she worked at numerous hosiery mills in Soddy and Chattanooga area. The last being the Soddy Marine Hosiery Mill. Her later years were spent as an employee of Owen Pharmacy and Daisy Prescription Shop.

Among the many names she held affectionately were Marguerite, Moma, granny and “the Hen.”

She was the widow of Jack Wilson and E.C. Smith.

Preceding her in death were her brothers, James Harold “Craze” Davis, Lonnie M. Davis, Thomas E. Davis and Bobby L. Davis; sisters, Peggy Joyce Davis, Soddy, Beatie Jewell Lewis, Dallas, Texas, and Allie Ruth Fling, of Tampa, Fla.

Survivors are a sister, Lois Kennedy; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Davis and Barbara Davis; one son, Jackie Ray Wilson, of Soddy-Daisy; three daughters, Frankie Pope, of Chattanooga, Doris Wilson, of Soddy-Daisy and Dixie Baker, of Dayton, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Jackie LaVaughn Wilson, Becky Everett and Darla Eldrdige; four great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Legacy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. DeWayne Renfro officiating.

Ernie Geer

GUILD — Ernie Pyle Geer, 60, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at his home.

He was born in Memphis to the late Samuel and Ruth Geer. Ernie was a retired engineer, working several years in the plastic industry all over the world.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Tuders, Sarah Mastersons, and Eunice Chapman; brothers, Samuel V, Geer Jr. and James Geer.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Brown Geer; son, Anthony Geer; daughter-in-laws, Alicia Geer and Denicia Carroll; brother, Luther Geer and sister, Virginia Turnball; two grandsons, Austin and Adam Geer; and special “angel”, Demplie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Rocky Springs Cemetery in Bridgeport, Ala.

Robert Maupin

CLEVELAND — Robert D. “Coach” Maupin, 65, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was an usher and he was the coordinator of the van ministry for the church. He was a coach at Bradley High School for the past 41 years. He worked as an assistant at Grissom Funeral Home for the past 17 years. Robert was an active member of the Noonday Lions Club. He was inducted in the Bradley County Old Timers Hall of Fame in 2007 and in 2008 he was inducted in the Bradley Central High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His testimony of kindness and love will live in for years to come in the hearts of many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H. T. Maupin Jr. and Johnnie Dykes Maupin.

He is survived by one brother, and sister-in-law, Mark and Gay Maupin, Signal Mountain; one sister, Jo Terry Evans, Cleveland, Tenn.; one aunt, Dorothy Shellabarger, Signal Mountain; three nieces, Jennifer Powell and family of Chattanooga, Amy Maupin, Signal Mountain, and Terri Evans, Cleveland; two nephews, Chuck Evans and Josh Evans, Cleveland and one great-nephew, Henry Jordan, Cleveland; very special friends, Turner and Liz Jackson, Dale Hughes, David Goins, Mark Grissom and Steve Gibson. A host of friends also survive.

Interment will be held today, Nov. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. CST at Collier Cemetery in Bledsoe County, Tenn., with the Coaching Staff of Bradley High School serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cleveland Noonday Lions Club.

SOUTH PITTSBURG — Betty Jo Simmons, 77, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

Daughter of the late Mason Agee and Maggie Thurman Parham, she was a former employee of Yarncrafters in Chattanooga and was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald “Shorty” Simmons.

She is survived by her daughters, Susie Seadorf, of Jasper, Tenn., and Jan Hurst, of South Pittsburg; grandsons, Adam Seadorf and Brian Seadorf, both of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; great-grandson, Beckett Hughes Seadorf; and three brothers, Joel Parham, of Englewood, Tenn., Eddie Parham, of Chattanooga, Curtis Parham, of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST at the South Pittsburg chapel of Rogers Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. John Smith.

FORT OGLETHORPE — William Harrold Fuson, 75, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009.

He was born to the late Will and Aileen Scott on June 28, 1934. He was a member of St. James Methodist Church, former owner/operator of Rite-Way Pest Control, former Mayor and City Councilman of Fort Oglethorpe, the former Commander of the Power Squadron, and an avid golfer.

He was also preceded in death by his son, William “Butch” Fuson.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fuson, of Fort Oglethorpe; six children and spouses, Becky (Richard) Carter, of Texas, Sheree (Roy) Milsap, Danny Fuson, all of Chattanooga, Michael (Kim) Fuson, of Spring City, Sheri-Lahn (Michael) Webster-Mount, of Ringgold, and Alan Webster, of Fort Oglethorpe; sister, Doris (Dale) White, of LaFayette; cousin, Fred (Thero) Fuson, of Ooltewah; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

ROSSVILLE — Eileen Belle Humpert, formerly of Abilene and Winfred, Kan., died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local hospital.

She had been a resident of Rossville for four years, moving from Winfield, Kan. Mrs. Humpert was a member of Winfield Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Myrtle Morton Batcheller.

Kiley Abbott

BRIDGEPORT — Kiley Danon Abbott, 38, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his home after a lengthy illness.

Kiley had worked at U.S. Gypsum, was a member of The Chapel Church and a North Jackson High School Graduate Class of 1989. He loved to help coach his son’s Bridgeport Little League Football and Baseball Teams and was there at every opportunity.

Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Eursie Webster and Joe and Marie Abbott.

He is survived by his parents, Don and Shirley Abbott; son, Kade Danon Abbott; brothers, Kevin (Marcy) Abbott, Kerry (Holli) Abbott; sister, Kim (Barry) Myers; nieces, Hannah and Aleah Abbott; nephew, Benjamin Myers, all of Bridgeport; a host other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. CST today, Nov. 13, at Rudder Funeral Home chapel officiated by Brother Josh Myers and Brother Brian Guess.

BRYANT — Kathy Seabolt, 56, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Seabolt was a member of Bible Methodist Church and retired from SCT Yarns.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Earline Smith.

Survivors include, husband, Roy James “RJ” Seabolt; son Chris “Skip” Seabolt; grandson, Bill Cody Seabolt, all of Bryant.

CENTRE — Harold Delon Woods, 67, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Erlanger Hospital.
