Shelby Ackerman
Shelby Jean Coates Ackerman, 71, of Hixson, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.
Shelby was born on March 22, 1938, in Marshall, N.C., and was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. She worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC and then the Social Security Administration in Nashville and Cleveland, Tenn. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Shelby was a member of Central Church of Christ, the Ladies Class, wife of an elder and a devoted Christian.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Mary Ollie Reese Coates; brothers, James Hershel Coates and Claude Richard Coates; half-sisters, Arnon Dupree and Magdella Rhymer.
Shelby is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Ackerman; children, David and wife, Donna, Ackerman, Pamela Raymond, Eddie and wife, Steffanie, Ackerman, and Beth and husband, David, Moss; grandchildren, Rachel, Sam and Stephen Ackerman, Chase and Hunter Raymond, Will Ackerman; Hayden, Haley, Holden and Hudson Moss; sisters, Helen Worley and husband Kenneth, Ruby Gambell Boone and husband, Johnny, and Wilma Hughes and husband, Jeff; brothers, E. J. Coates and wife, Genevieve, Ray Donald Coates and wife, Jane, several nieces and nephews.
Services for Shelby will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Central Church of Christ, 400 Vine Street, with Minister David Schonhoff officiating.
Burial will follow in National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today at the North Chapel and 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Judie Bailey
Judie E. Bailey, 63, of Hixson, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.
She was a dental hygienist in the Chattanooga area for many years. She was loved by so many. She was a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Clotilda B. Bailey; and father, E. Donald Bailey.
Survivors include two sisters, Donna B. Coyner and Jeanette B. Hames, both of Harrison; four nephews; three nieces; four great-nieces “her girls”.
Visitation will be today, Nov. 17, from 4-7 p.m., in Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
Interment will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in the Old Rugged Cross garden. Dr. Dan Sansbury will be officiating.

Louise Craig
Louise Craig, always thinking of others, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
She was 89 years old, a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, and of the Baptist faith.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, E.R. “Bud” Craig; and a son, Charles Larry Craig.
She is survived by her son, Marshall (Betty) Craig: grandchildren, Rusty (Shawn) Craig, Mike (Theresa) Craig, Cindy (Jimmy) Jones, Kim (Danny) Combs and Lynn (Rob) Baldwin; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Mildred Arnold, Bill and Kinuko Dye.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Fletcher officiating.
Burial in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Marian Derryberry
Marian L. Derryberry, 77, of East Ridge, now living with her sons in Ooltewah, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009.
She was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church and was retired as a secretary from TVA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harold Derryberry and her parents, William Andrew and Ethel Haswell Tate.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Derryberry and Rob Derryberry, both of Ooltewah; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Melvin and Peggy Derryberry; one sister and brother-in-law, Rubye and Jack Henley of Chattanooga.

Josephine Ellis, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hixson where she served on the Mother’s Board, Usher Ministry and Choir.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Brown; sister, Pearline Harris; and husband, Monroe Ellis.

Hartley Lee
Hartley Grace Embrey Phipps Lee, 101, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in her Hixson home.
She was born Jan. 24, 1908, to the late Perry and Maggie Hixson Phipps. “Aunt Hartley” was a lifelong Hixson resident who worked for many years at Carter Brothers Manufacturing. She loved her family and pets and will be greatly missed.
The family wants to express appreciation to Dr. Donald Ziegler, nurse Lauren, loving caregivers Charlotte Garrett and Mary Reed and to Mildred for her friendship.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ellen, Mary, Maggie, Pansy; brother, Murrell; niece, Marion; and husband, William V. Lee.
She is survived by niece, Sandra Hill (Randy) Doyle and their children, Josh and Sarah; by nephew, Phipps Martin (Christine) and their children, Karen, Lyn and Renee; by niece, Juanita Bull and her children, Ricky, Randy and Cheryl.

Marilyn Lee
Marilyn “Mickey” Johns Lee, 74, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at her home in Hixson after an extended illness.
Mrs. Lee was born on Feb. 15, 1935 in Etowah, Tenn. She was one of eleven children of the late Leo and Stella Johns.
She moved to Atlanta where she married Ben “Benny J.” Lee of Alma, Ga.
She worked at Walter F. George School of Law in Macon, GA before moving to Conyers, GA where she lived until her husband's retirement when they moved to Hixson.
Mrs. Lee is survived by her husband, Ben; her son, Chuck Lee (Susan), of Chattanooga; daughter, Lisa Dubernard (Thierry) of Roswell, Ga., as well as five grandchildren, Ben and Sam Lee, Nicolas, Valerie and Robert Dubernard; brothers and sisters, Stella “Ted”, Louise, Ralph, Ruth, Margaret and Terry.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 followed by the memorial service at 6 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace.

Tommy C. Neighbors, 72, of Soddy-Daisy passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at a local healthcare facility.
He was a member of Mile Straight Baptist Church. He was a retired brick layer and worked at Clements Antiques. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Effie Neighbors; and a brother, Archie Neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Neighbors; son, David Neighbors; brothers, Cassidy (Audrey) Neighbors, Marvin (Juanita) Neighbors; sisters, Mary Ann Poe, Eva Jane (Ralph) Lewis; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tom Goss officiating.

Tilda Oehmig
Tilda Thomas Oehmig, 83, died peacefully in her sleep at her Lookout Mountain home, Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
Known affectionately as simply “Tilda” by countless friends both young and old, she was the last of a generation of Oehmigs who had called Chattanooga home for more than 100 years.
The daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Louise Thomas, she also was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Daniel West Oehmig.
Tilda’s prismatic life, punctuated by great enthusiasms and deeper contemplations, resulted in many rewards and recognitions, among them being named Girls’ Preparatory School's Distinguished Alumna. She was also a president of the Junior League of Chattanooga, the Lookout Mountain Garden Club and a member of countless organizations, including the Colonial Dames. Following graduation from GPS, Tilda graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. William H. Thomas and his wife, Dickie, Chestnut Hill, Mass.; 10 nieces and nephews, William Britain Oehmig and his wife, Neal, L. West Oehmig, Ruth Oehmig, Marion Oehmig Latimer, all of Lookout Mountain, H. King Oehmig and his wife, Margy, Chattanooga, Randolph Oehmig and his wife, Janet, Crystal River, Fla., William C. Oehmig and his wife, Alice, Houston, Texas, Donna Oehmig, Arundel, Maine, Annie T. Williams, Virginia, Susie T. Macleod and her husband, Morris, Brookland, N.Y.; 14 great-nieces and nephews and 15 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 3:30 pm Thursday at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain with the Rev. Robert Childress and the Rev. H. King Oehmig officiating. The interment of the ashes will follow the service.
The family will receive friends from 3-3:30 pm Thursday at the church. Following the services there will be a celebration of her life at her home.

She was born March 13, 1926 in Belle Ellen, Ala. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Lillian Hyde, of Bessemer, Ala; brothers, Bud and C.W. Hyde, of West Blocton, Ala.; and sister, Mary Evelyn Williams.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Edward A. Rogers, of Hixson; daughters, Linda (Bill) Harding, of Greensboro, N.C. and Sandy (Bryan) Jones, of Hixson; son, Tommy (Cindy) Rogers, of Pelham, Ala.; grandsons, Brian (Nikki) Simpson and Scott (Laura) Simpson; and two great-granddaughters, Kaleigh and Sydnie Simpson, of Wilmington, N.C.; brother, Kenneth (Bonnie) Hyde, of Morris, Ala.; and sister, Lorraine (Charles) Rhodes, of Bessemer, Ala.

Paul Alvin “Cotton” Smith, 86, Lookout Mountain, Tenn., died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at his residence.
He was retired from American Lava/3M after 42 years of service. Mr. Smith was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Chattanooga Valley Kiwanis Club and the James Craig Lodor American Legion Post 148.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Manzo F. and Jenny Babb Smith; and siblings, Muriel Walden, Lucille O’Kelly, Conrad Smith and Jack B. Smith.
Survivors are his wife, Rosemary Goode Smith, Lookout Mountain; and daughters, Kathy L. (Tim) Miller and Dowling (Gerry) King, both of Lookout Mountain; siblings, James T. John Stigall Sr.
John Clement Stigall Sr., 58, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.
He was an author, Poet-in-Residence, and Associate Professor of English at Chattanooga State Technical Community College. He was the youngest of five children born to Ada Mae Dallas Stigall and the late Robert Stigall. John was a product of the Chattanooga School System, attending Seventh-day Adventist School, Parkplace, Orchard Knob Elementary, and Riverside High School.
John received a BA in English at State University New York, Cortland and a Master of Arts in English at State University New York, Brockport. John developed a love for poetry and became a skilled poet in his own right. After completing graduate school in 1980, John spent six weeks doing poetry readings in Spain and France.
John returned to Chattanooga in 1980 to teach English courses at Chattanooga State Technical Community College where he published several books of poetry and founded the literary magazine Phoenix. John received countless academic awards and many newspaper articles were written about him in the Chattanooga Times and the Chattanooga News Free Press. He married a childhood schoolmate, Iris Starks, in 1982. Two children were born in this union.
John was well loved by his students, who often populated his office. He was an avid collector of ink pens and cologne; his massive CD and record collections exemplify a love for music of all sorts. John loved to joke and laugh with all of those who surrounded him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Stigall Sr.; and brother, Robert Stigall Jr.
Survivors include: wife, Iris Starks Stigall; mother, Ada Mae Stigall; son, John Stigall Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.; daughter, Johnnia Stigall, Cincinnati, OH; sisters, Sylvia Stigall, Chapel Hill, N.C. and Patricia Stigall, Chattanooga; brother, Anthony (Lydia) Stigall, Seattle, Wash.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Irene Thornburg
Irene C. Thornburg, 86, of Hixson went to her heavenly home on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
She was born in Dayton, Tenn., on Aug. 2, 1923 to the late James and Nell Carney.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Vickie Thornburg; granddaughter, April Thornburg; three sisters, Ethel Marler, Helen Devault, and Imagene Harris; one brother Agnew Carney.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years John Thornburg; daughter, Twila (Charlie) Fuller; son, David (Cynthia ) Thornburg; grandchildren, Natasha Fuller, Amy Thornburg, Michael (Mary) Thornburg, Kirisa (Steven) Patrick; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Nevaeh; brothers, Warren and Charles Carney, of Dayton, Tenn., Bryan Carney, of Michigan and Doyle Carney, of Alabama; several nieces and nephews.

Vivian Chapman Vandergriff, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
Vivian was born in Greenville, S.C. and was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. She was a 1946 graduate of Chattanooga City High School and was a nursing student at Newell Clinic. Vivian was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church, the Ruth Welch Sunday School Class and was involved with the Senior Adults. She loved her Lord, family and traveling.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, John Vandergriff; a daughter, Joan V. Mahoney; parents, R.D. and Sarah Stuart Chapman.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Cindy) Vandergriff and Nancy (Gary) Hoover; granddaughter, Erica Nicole Vandergriff; sister, Leta (Walter) Clepper; brother, James D. Chapman; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel.

Stanton Williams
Stanton Burton Williams, 87, San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Chattanooga, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at his residence in Texas.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boerne, Texas, and was formerly a member of Grace Baptist Church in Chattanooga. Mr. Williams was retired from Armour Meat Co. and Wynn Beauty Supply of Atlanta after many years of service. He was co-founder of the Cranberry Cupboard Catering in Fort Oglethorpe. Mr. Williams was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Survivors are wife, Wilma Williams; son and daughter-in-law, Paul (Molli) Williams, Fair Oaks, Texas; daughters and son-in-law, Sande (Joe) Hartnett, Sarasota, Fla., Cheryl Williams, LaPorte, Texas, Kym Brookshire, Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher Williams, St. Louis, Tate, Claire, Grant and Mae Williams, all of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas.

James Hayes
DECATUR — James “Jim” Nathan Hayes, 74, died Saturday night, Nov. 14, 2009, at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga.
Born in McMinn County, he grew up in the St. Elmo community in Chattanooga and was a resident of Decatur for the past 34 years. He was the son of the late Thomas Chell and Ollie Mae Kennedy Hayes and was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Joyce Denton Hayes. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was retired from Inland Container Corporation as a truck driver.

RINGGOLD — Joshua Andrew Dobbins, 21, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, he attended the Hitchin' Post for Christ Church in LaFayette, Ga., and was an employee of Cigna Insurance.
He is survived by his mother, Susan Rhodes Dobbins, of Ringgold; father, Tim and Treena Dobbins, of Ringgold; brother, Timothy Lee Dobbins, of Ringgold; sister, Brittany Nicole Dobbins of Ringgold; maternal grandmother, Reba Rhodes, of Ringgold; paternal grandparents, Junior Ray and Linda Joyce Dobbins, of Chattanooga; paternal stepgrandmother, Nina Alford, of East Ridge; several aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Brother Charles Rhodes and Brother Jack Key officiating.
Interment will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

CHICKAMAUGA — William Fred Pitts, 57, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.
He was a lifelong resident of Northwest Georgia and of the Baptist faith. He was known for his sense of humor and he loved to cook on his grill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Frances Pitts; son, Daniel Pitts; and sister, Elizabeth Pitts Kirby.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Carmen Pitts; daughter, Tiffany Pitts (Ryan) Avila, of Savannah, Ga; son, Aaron (Erica) Pitts, of Flintstone; three stepchildren, Tammy Plemons, of Rossville, Lew Myers II, of Chickamauga, and Tony Myers, of Chattanooga; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Steven Kellogg officiating.
Interment will follow at Forrest Hills Cemetery, Chattanooga.

She was born in Cherokee County, Ala., to the late Wm. H. and Ethel Lee Newberry, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Joe and Ralph Newberry, Louella Kinsey and her husband, the Rev. Curtis Stapp. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her children, Michael (Kim) Stapp, Brenda (Mike) Chaney, Lisa (Greg) Hullender; brother, Herbert “Bud” Newberry all of Ringgold; grandchildren, Amy, Kelly, Jenni, Valerie, Jason, Mateena, Julie, Michael; 13 great-grandchildren; special niece, Pat (Bob) Prescott; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held noon today, Nov. 17, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Don Self officiating.
