Brent Gunkel
Brent M. Gunkel, 89, of East Brainerd, formerly of California, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gunkel was a longtime resident of California and had been a resident of East Brainerd for the past three years. He was retired from Boeing International and was a WWII Army Veteran having served in Europe. He was an avid photographer, nature lover, and loved to travel and hike.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Lou Gunkel; and son, Phillip Gunkel.
He is survived by his son, Stan Gunkel and wife, Dottie, Chattanooga; daughter, Rebecca Butler, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, Julie Turner, Ooltewah; Tracy Chadwick, Jennifer Keller, Jon Gunkel, all of California; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.
Interment will be at a later date at Rose Hills Memorial Park in California.

Sandra Rigsby Hillis, 62, of Chattanooga, (East Ridge) Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009.
Native of Warren County, Tenn., she was a retired investment and trust banker and member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church, and preceded in death by parents, Sterling and Thelma Hillis Rigsby.

Hildred Marshall Pyle, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in a local hospital.
She attended Eastdale Baptist Church and had worked in the nursery there. Following her husband’s death Hildred went to school and then to work for Blue Cross doing data entry. She had been active in her neighborhood garden club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Rolla Pyle; and a daughter, Margaret Karen Hembree.
Survivors include her sister, Melva Pyle and niece, Leslie Ashton, both of Austin, Texas.

ENGLEWOOD —Wayne Martin Brown, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Tenn.
He was a native of and a former resident of Red Bank, Tenn. having moved to McMinn County, Tenn. in 1972. He was a farmer and was a former owner and operator of Brown’s Feed and Seed in Red Bank, Tenn.
He was a son of the late Ira and Eva Martin Brown and preceded in death by his wife, Stella Loree Gray Brown on Oct. 17, 1998; sister, Louise Brown Pitts; brother, Bennett Brown; and nephew, Jimmy Pitts.
He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Red Bank. Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Survivors: two daughters and son-in-law, Janice Brown-Keeble and husband, Don, Andrea Johnson, Knoxville; two grandchildren, Gina Gann-Cooper, James F. Gann Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Jimmy Gann III, Will Hutchins and Hunter Hutchins; nieces, Betty Pitts Marsh, Molly Brown Cozart and Becky Brown Jones.

Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

FORT OGLETHORPE — Eleanor Lorene Hatfield Chadwick, 89, departed this life Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.
She was born in Sulphur Springs, Ala., to the late Marvin and Ruth Oyler Hatfield, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Jean Spencer, Maurine Hurst, Marybelle Reeves, Marcus “Mark”, Weston, Woodrow “Buddy”, and Phillip Roy Hatfield; daughter, Delores McCarty; grandson, Steve Lillard; husbands, Gordon Lester Stallings, William “Bill” Chadwick, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Stallings, of Fort Oglethorpe, Elsie (Bud) Lillard, of Chattanooga; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. EST today Nov. 20, 2009 at Head Springs Cemetery in Valley Head, Ala.

R.C. DeLay Jr.
FORT OGLETHORPE — Roy Cecil “R.C.” DeLay Jr., 62, Burning Bush community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, 2009, at his earthly home.
He was the son of the late Roy C. DeLay Sr.
Mr. DeLay was a native of Catoosa County. He attended Rossville High School and graduated with many honors. He attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he received a Bachelor of Music Education degree.
Mr. DeLay was a charter member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. He sang many years with the Chattanooga Opera Association.
Mr. DeLay retired from the Catoosa County School system after 31 years of service. All of his teaching profession was at Ringgold Middle School where he taught general music, chorus and handbells.
He was a member of the National Education Association and Georgia Association of Educators where he was honored for professional excellence, outstanding leadership, dedicated service and commitment to public education in Georgia. He was honored as a lifetime retired member of GAE.
He was a member of the Music Educator’s Association and had a lifetime teaching certificate.
Mr. DeLay was a deeply committed Christian. He was the organist at Boynton Church of God. He was a professional musician on the accordion, organ, piano and saxophone.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jimmy Carlock DeLay (Mrs. Roy DeLay Sr.); one sister, Royce DeLay Beene; one nephew, Gerald Beene; a great-nephew, Michael Beene; three great-nieces, Rachel Beene, Skylark Beene and Chasity Beene.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Everett Gossett and the Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Ed Broome and Royce DeLay Beene will provide the music.
Interment will be in Burning Bush Cemetery with Dr. Brad DeLay, Phil DeLay, Daryl Moore, Melvin Broom, Carson Carlock and Maurice Bridgeman serving as active pallbearers. All cousins will serve as honorary pallbearers.

RINGGOLD — Joyce Henry Goodman, 64, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.
She was a 3rd grade teacher at Varnell Elementary for 18 years. Joyce was a devoted member of Grace Church in Ringgold. She was a Christian who was a Light for Christ in a dark world. The fragrance of her life will live on with the people that she touched.
Her father, Lee Henry; and her brother, Tommy Henry, preceded her in death.

CHICKAMAUGA — Peggy Louise Plaster Hill, 70, passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009.
She was born in Chickamauga, to the late Arnold and Annie Ruth Cline Plaster. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of Chickamauga Church of Christ and enjoyed being in the Red Hat Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Neal Hill; brothers, Joe Lewis Plaster and Dewitt Plaster.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Darrel Crouch, of Knoxville, Debbie and Steve Atcheson, of Chickamauga; sons and daughter-in-law, Darrell Hill, of Fort Worth, Texas, Terry and Donna Hill, of Chickamauga; sisters, Martha Durham and Betty Miller, both of Ringgold, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday morning until the service.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in the chapel with Ministers David Wade and Alfred Thomas officiating.
Burial will follow in Chickamauga Cemetery.
