East Ridge firefighters responded to a house fire this monring in which the human occupants of the house were OK, but two pets died.
About 7 a.m., responding to a house fire call at 6200 Holiday Drive, East Ridge firefighters and police arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the home, according to East Ridge Public Information Officer Erik Hopkins.
A husband, wife, and daughter were awoken by a smoke alarm and had already escaped the home when firefighters showed up, Officer Hopkins said, however, several pets were still inside.
While firefighters mananged to contain the fire to three rooms, a dog and cat perished in the fire, Officer Hopkins said, and the home was heavily damaged by smoke.
An adult male occupant of the home also was taken to Park Ridge East Hospital for possible smoke inhalation, he said.
East Ridge investigators are trying to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire, however; foul play is not expected, Officer Hopkins said. Damage is estimated to be at least $75,000, he said.
Along with East Ridge units, Fort Oglethorpe Engine 8 also responded to the fire.
