A fight between two rival gangs was behind shootings that injured nine people on Cherry Street in downtown Chattanooga on Christmas Eve, police say.

It happened as about 400 teens were leaving a Christmas party at Club Fathom, police spokeswoman Jerri Weary said. One gang member pulled a gun and began firing into the crowd, and a member of an opposing gang began shooting back, Weary said.

Officers were trying to identify the shooters when one person pointed a gun at Officer Jacques Weary, who fired back four times. The shooter escaped and police don't know if he was hit. Jacques Weary was uninjured.

Five of the people shot were juveniles and four were adults. An adult and two juveniles were admitted to a local hospital, Jerri Weary said. The most seriously injured was a 17-year-old youth who was hit in the pelvis, but none of the injuries was believed to be life threatening, she said.

Investigators also are working on a report from 2505 Oak St., whose occupants told police Saturday night that suspects from the shootings were in front of their home threatening to shoot up the house. When police arrived no suspects were on the scene and there was no indication that the house had been shot.

Another shooting took place around the same time at 1202 Poplar Springs Court.

Thomas Heffner, 18, told police he was walking with friends when a black Chevy with tinted windows pulled up and someone got out of the back of the car and began firing. Heffner ran away and was struck in the hand. He was treated and released at the scene, Weary said.

Jacques Weary has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting. The Chattanooga Police Department Internal Affairs Division will conduct a parallel investigation with the Major Crimes Division into Officer Weary’s shooting.

“This is a lengthy investigation which will take investigators some time to verify information,” Jerri Weary said.

When did this place start serving booze? Google "... Fathom "412 Market" 21 to drink..." I thought the city had an agreement with the Club and Manny had to approve events there. How about the TFP interview surrounding business owners/managers and ask what they think about this ongoing nuisance. What Club Fathom has been doing to downtown.

Actually this situation is a tragedy, but an even worse tragedy is the mental state and lack of critical thought ability for "riverman" and "MasterChefLen", stupidity at its best I say, but hey, Manny Rico can share a bit of the blame for this as he, like the rest of us, is prone to stupid comments and nothing else. Not sure what is meant by the term "hood dwellers" but if my suspicions are right, hopefully I will see the two of you there. If not for a solution, then maybe for a meeting to get together and see who to blame next.

Lr103 I am certain that Hater-Nooga has been around for a long time. Do not be fooled by the situation one bit as a lot of its inhabitants reside on both mountains, Lookout and Signal, and in the state to our south. These people work together to tear our community apart. We do not have to let them. I am ready, as many are, to take our City back from the criminal corporate minds that seek financial gain by exploiting the tragedy they help to create. Chattanooga is a great City and areas that have their housing projects on wheels are no different as they have their criminals not only on the streets, but in their governments as well.

Why should they have to explain? Do any of you take time to think about the ignorance of such statements before spitting them out?

I'm guessing both you are reading the same story. I didn't read anywhere here where the police specifically mentioned that this was gang related. I read that some teens were at a club in downtown Chattanooa. A fight broke out after a Christmas part and outside the club. Someone pulled a gun and fired a shot. An off duty police officer working at the club fired back. Several other incidents ensued during or immediately following this same time frame, which may or may not be related to this one event. We don't know who shot who. What race or economic class the shooter or victims are.

What's there to prove. The response wasn't to who's shooting who. It's the ignorant suggestion that Brown, Favors and the NAACP needs to explain it. Really a very dumb statement. Did you even take time to think about that before you put your fingers to the keyboard?

As for proving you wrong the vast majority of these shootings involved adults. Meaning 18 year olds and above. So, I guess you're wrong after all? And we still don't know who was actually involved in the shootings and their racial, ethnic or economic makeup, do we?

I seem to recall him offering loaves and fishes to the poor.

Yeah I can't say race the people involved were. All I'll say is the last time I went by Fathom, it was about 400 white people going in there. So let's not necessarily jump to the conclusion that they were black.

Secondly, there were hundreds of people in that club. Only 1 or 2 pulled out a gun and started shooting. Why is the whole room being condemned over that?

This is what you call lumping the whole group in together. I'm a black female in my 20s, no kids, never been in jail, got a college degree in computes, work at good ass company probably making more than half of you racists.

I can say most of my black friends have a similar story. I see all the racist comments by white people on here and yet I don't lump in every white people because a few are backwards and ignorant.

mccuthison9, I think from the tone of your response, you did not correctly understand what I said, as I did not condemn or judge anybody involved in the shooting. Nor was I trying to spread cynicism, but instead rejecting it through sarcasm.

Not exactly the most virtuous way to respond, perhaps, but a popular one. It seems, though, that you took it literally, instead of in the fashion it was intended.

talkthetalk911: You have a suggestion of other biblical lessons to use in this situation? Me, I realize that trying to follow the bible consistently would be impossible, since it does contradict itself, but even were that not the case, there are sections which I explicitly reject. I may be wrong to do so. If so, then I will await the result of judgment in the hereafter. I will hope for an explanation, but if I don't get one, I may find that I have to accept that. You, on the other hand, will have to provide persuasive reasoning if you wish me to concur with you. Like I said, try starting with some examples.

If we don't, our beautiful City will fall and will be no more. Think of what we have! Think of what our City may become if this violence is not curtailed.

happy with bulbs. i have neither the time nor the patience to school you so i will make it simple. If you believe that the Bible is God's "breathed" word then yes picking and choosing what you choose to believe from it to support your own personal ideas or agendas makes you wrong.

December 25, 2011 at 11:31 a.m.

Talk: Well, if you are pressed for time, I don't know why you're wasting your time with that assertion, since I do not believe any such thing, and I thought it was rather clear from my words that I didn't.

Perhaps you might find your time more productively spent actually trying to express what you believe the Bible has in the way of illustrative lessons for this situation instead of worrying about what you erroneously claim I believe. Or some other source, if you wish to relate from that. The only thing your impatient declaration of simplicity has done is shown that haste can easily make waste since you're quite fruitlessly jousting with a windmill that doesn't represent my views on the Bible. Again, I believe it to be a source of wisdom, but not without some prudence.

In this case, I do believe a compassionate offering would be wiser, with less condemnation and more seeking of ways to improve people's lives and aspirations. Hope, I find, is a great deterrent to violence, since it does lead to people feeling less desperate and angry.

If you have something else you believe should be done, again, let us know about it.

tnwaltz, I agree, but I do differ with those whose solutions tend toward the oppressive. Though I can understand wanting more answers before action.

Department of Childrens Services Commissioner Kate O'Day says juvinile crime is down as well as adult crime. It's evident she hasn't looked at the TBI numbers or more importantly outside her window on the STREET. She has proposed to close Taft Youth Center, the only Maximum Security Center in the state. Taft has taken the troubled youth of the state for 90 years, and she says the state dosn't need hardware secure facilities to house these youth. A bi-partician group of law makers are having a rally in support of the higest performing juvinile facility in the state at the Bledsoe County Courthouse Jan. 3rd at 5:00pm. Everyone is welcome. Call your legislators and tell them Ms.O'Day is either misinformed or has a hidden agenda with her proposal. Year after year it is the same, victim enters ER, police follow, victim states I didnt see anything, I was on my porch minding my own business or it was a a light skinned dude in a dark colored car. Noone ever sees or knows anything but there is anger at the police to do "something". Never is there any acceptence of blame or cooperation with athorities to bring the perp to justice only anger and a plan for revenge. And the cycle continues. Prey on your neighbors and no worries because nobody sees nothin. O'Day told Haslam during a November budget hearing that Taft is the system's most costly facility, with a $12 million annual operating budget and as much as $37 million in capital needs. By closing Taft, the department would save $4.4 million a year, according to O'Day. Most of the 167 people who work at Taft are trained by the Tennessee Department of Correction and should be able to find jobs at the nearby $208 million Bledsoe County Correctional Complex, slated to open in 2013, O'Day said. O'Day responded Friday, saying the $37 million in repairs and updates needed at Taft includes repairs to its 1932-era boiler, replacement of a security building and kitchen facility and construction of new dormitories, which were built in 1943 and 1963. Taft was built in 1918. These are direct quotes from the commissioner of children’s services Kate O’Day. This is the same commissioner that told Governor Haslam during budget hearings in Knoxville last month;“there is no differentiating line between Dependent Neglect/Foster Children and Juvenile Justice kids.” Either this commissioner is being badly misinformed from within her own department, or she is misleading the Governor and the taxpayers for another reason. This is the facts of the case! 1. Tafts total budget is 12,328,500. In this 12.3 million there is the operating costs of a water plant that serves thousands of residents, SETRCF, and Fall Creek Falls State Park. The state will not allow Taft to profit from the water sales, in fact they don’t let them break even. In this budget number TRICOR farm utilities are deducted. This is a large milk producing farm that runs 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. The costs to operate these things are 400,000 dollars annually. This drops Tafts budget to 11,928,500 in comparison WHYDC’s in Nashville budget is 12,148,400 Wilder in west Tn. 11,342,300 MVYDC in east Tn. 11,287,700. Considering Taft returned over 800,000 dollars in 2010 and 1.2 million in 2009 saying Taft is the most expensive is misleading. 2. Ms.O’Day says Taft needs 37 million in repairs of this 37 million she has listed 1932 era boiler, new security complex, and kitchen. 1948 and 1963 dorms. Even if all this were true it is a far cry from 37 million. The truth is Taft has 2 new boilers powered by natural gas installed in Oct.2005, There was a new state of the art security complex built in 2006, The dorms and kitchen were totally renovated in 1982. Taft was accredited by ACA in 2009 with a score of 99.9. The lowest score the kitchen has ever received from the health department going back 6 years is 93. As I said earlier either this commissioner is being badly misinformed from within her own department or she is misleading the Governor and the tax payers for another reason? You be the judge!!

The people tearing this city to shreds aren't the juveniles allegedly committing crimes as much as it's the same ones who log on over and over again, hiding behind their screen names, and use these tragedies to hide their bigotry and spew their hatred. They use these situation to promote segregation. Then if they're not tryin to pit poor whites and blacks against one another, they try to use the browns, like Rico, to pit the blacks and poor whites against the browns, the browns and poor whites against the blacks. These are the same ship'em back to crowd who are always making snide remarks about immigrants who look like Rico. Now they're on here hugging up to Rico because he said something they like. On a drop, and when Rico say something they don't like, they turn right around and use the blacks and poor whites to attack him and his-kind.

And to think you all can't even find something in support or work together on solutions, rather than ripping one another to shreds, on the day of what's supposedly the birth of Jesus Christ, you cliam as your savior.

It makes you wonder who's really controlling the scenes behind a lot of these problems Chattanooga is struggling with and why? Anyone, even a so-called law-abiding citizen can drive by a crowd and shoot to get sh/t started, then blame it on someone else. Look at the white boys who went into E/Lake a few months ago. If they hadn't been apprehended when they were, that would have been blamed on gang and the haters would have been on here shouting their racist, bigoted rhetoric too about people on welfare, living in public housing and getting foodstamps.

Chattanooga might have its problems and are struggling with its youth, but you all are the greater problems that devouring and destroying the city.

No one person can claim the fame for making this country great. And no one person or group of people can be blamed for what will be its demise if you all don't get your acts together. Those people who made this country great come in every color of the monochromatic rainbow and then some. As those who are seeking to destroy it also comes in varying shades and hues.

Two million plus people in our jails now ... new statistics just out showing that one third of all people in the country have been arrested by age 23 at least once ... a country besieged by Mexican drug cartels with unbelievable levels of drug-related violence now washing over our country ... meth labs popping up everywhere like its a whack-a-mole game ... 10,000 people murdered by guns on average in the U.S. every year with hundreds of thousands more wounded ... a culture that celebrates violence in the movies and games played ... a growing number of people that think violence is a perfectly acceptable way to resolve disputes including even the most trivial slights ... we live in a sick, depraved, morally bereft and diseased culture that is rotting away like roadkill on a highway in the middle of a Texas summer ... this country will likely be "fully maggotized" within a few more decades -- if not sooner. Welcome to the "new normal."

You're right Legend. Hearing incidents like this in the news all the time of black on black shootings and crimes infuriates white people and it should infuriate black people. It brings out racist sounding comments like it did in this thread. The problem I have is that black people don't want to acknowledge, accept responsibility for the problem, and don't seem to want to actively want to come up with solutions. It seems like the black leaders including Favors and Brown, are so quick to jump in the news to scream racism about the smallest comment made by a white or Hispanic leader. They are all over the news for things that really mean nothing. Where are they right now? This is a serious incident that should have them speaking even on Christmas day. We won't hear from them until another white guy makes a stupid comment in a meeting or to the media...scream racism....blah, blah, blah. Head in sand....nothing done.

I moved to Brainerd a few years ago from the hixson area to be closer to work. It was a good idea at the time to buy a house in need of repair and work on fixing it up. I was met by bigotry from both the whites and the blacks. The white folks from the suburbs whould ask in whispered tones as they look around " Isn't that a black neighborhood? You better get out of there before you get killed!(and they still do) I would ask how far do I have to drive to feel safe? Then I would follow up with "aren't there a lot of meth heads out that way?" Noone wants to hear that! Then I would walk around my yard to by harrased by street people calling me names and telling me I have no business in a "black" neighborhood, I would responed that noone told me it was a black neighborhood. As I went about fixing up my house over time I realized I lived by two crack houses and that I had dealers on the corner. I tried to mind my own business but I kept getting broken into. 4 times always by someone living nearby watching me come and go. I started paying more attention to what was happening and realized it was only a few bad people terrorizing the neighborhood. So I went and got a concealed carry permit and asked the drug dealers outside to stand in front of thier own house and sell there product. That got me a brick through my window. I went down and had a meeting with the police and within a few weeks a survalence car was parked on my block, then a few weeks later a big van and several police cars showed up and took the bad people away. Word must have gotten out after that because they didn't come back. Now I get to see children riding bikes and I got a little dog to walk and all my neighbors are so nice. I see them working in thier yards waving as I go by. Noone lives in fear anymore. So I guess that quote about tyranny thriving when good men do nothing must be true. Now the white folks are still saying I told you so but I don't care I love living in a diverse community. I ilistrate this story to you because it just took working with the police and standing up for my right to live in peace that started the change. It's not easy but the first step is to call 698-2525 and report the problem and then you must be a steward of your community by working with the police. You must point to the criminal and say "Not on my block". thank you and god bless

You and yours are such a sad and pitiful group. My friends and I, many from other countries, were discussing people like you. We all agreed that you get some kind of sick thrill from these tragedies. The added incentive is your kind get to rant your hatred while hiding it behind a pretense of concern.

This is a social ill that can't be solved by the NAACP or ministers. There's also an industry that has been brought to life just for the sole purpose of making money from these people's trials and tribuliations. And just like slavery wasn't given up without a fight(acts of slavery were still ongoing well into the 20Th century) for those who wanted to preserve it, neither will crime and these social ills plaguing your communities and the country will be given up without a fight to presevere them. Look at all the people who will be out of a job if some real, dedicated individuals stepped up to the plate and was actually serious about solving rather than exploiting these problems and using them to divide and segregate again. Someone has already mentioned the closing of the Taft detention as if holding everyone hostage, in fear and using blackmail. Then there's the downsizing of police departments across the nation and others fighting against that as if to say, "Look, this is what you'll be faced with if you don't keep us, give a raise, and hire more of us." "Send money now! And send it SOON!, or else!!*

What a sad, pitiful nation this country has become when people would exploit such tragedies and sufferins for selfishness and greed.

i lived in Chattanooga for a year last year, and i loved it. but a huge part of what drove me away is the bigotry. yes, i saw that a lot of the crimes that were committed downtown were committed by black people. do you realize how much that has to do with how big of a population of african-americans you have in Chattanooga? I live in Utah now, and there are hardly any black people. So there is hardly any black crime. But no matter where you live, there is a minority that gets the brunt of peoples' aggression. i'm white. i DON'T have insurance. i work in a restaurant. does that mean i'm a "hood dweller"? a parasite sucking your resources and hard-earned money dry? no. i take care of myself. as many black people do. and as many white people DON'T. Chattanooga is not going down the drain because of black people. it is going down the drain because of neglect, denial, and recession.

Brainerd has always been a diverse area of Chattanooga. Much more so than some areas that became diverse later.

I agree that people should work with the police and call police to report suspicious or criminal activity. However, that too has sometimes been abused by neighbors who called the police and purposely made false allegations against innocent/law abiding citizens out of vindictiveness or just to inimidate a neighbor into moving from the neighborhood. The police, taking the story at face value, aggressively responds and that only created hostility in the neighborhood between neighbors who might be of a different race or social class.

So, yes! By all means people should take an active role in making their neighborhoods safe. But the police should let them know they will not allow such a privilege to be abused and they will not allow themselves to be used just because someone doesn't like the social class or ethnicity of their next door neighbor.

However, whichever sounding phrases you and others like to use, that's besides the point. There is racism, and then there are facts. And the fact is that the vast majority of reckless gun play that is being directed against other people in the Chattanooga urban environment is being perpetrated almost exclusively by armed black youths. Don't all of you find this phenomenon very strange? What is the reason? Rest assured, it's not because they are black per se but rather its attributable to the social mores that are, apparently, part of today's black culture. And it boils down to this: "You dis me and I put a cap in yo' ass." Right? Or is it more complicated than that?

This all came to a crisis in our community when the flash mobs in Coolidge Park showed up earlier this year ... then it seemed to migrate to the Walnut Street Bridge briefly before making it's way further downtown around the Club Fathom and Fire & Ice Club.

Part of the problem is citizens are going to have to get more involved with the local police. They cannot do it all by themselves. They need our support and that includes our moral support. We also need to listen to our local police, carefully, to see what resources they need to be maximally effective. And perhaps most of all ... we need a new mayor who knows how to lead with determination and vision and who is also smart, dedicated and possessing high integrity.

It really dosn't matter what race the suspects or the victims are. They are all troubled youth in need of rehabilitation. When kids are raised with little or no moral values bad things happen. Any suspect that are convicted of this crime and is not yet 18 will be sent to DCS. The new DCS commissioner is a social worker from the private provider networks, and believes these type youth shouldn’t be locked up. She thinks they should be in a residential setting. She stated to the Governor Haslam in the November budgets that “there was no differentiating line between dependent neglect/foster kids and Juvenile Justice kids" I would strongly disagree with her! Felony charges is what I would say set them apart. Wouldn’t you? Now she is proposing to close the only Maximum Security facility in the state. As long as you have your political big wigs sitting up in Nashville trying to convince themselves that these are children of the future they need to wake the Hell up. These are not children. These are young adults who have no respect for society whatsoever much less for themselves. The children of the times now are dangerous and need to be taught the value of life before they start taking over if they haven't already. I have been reading about an institution in Pikeville "Taft Youth Center" that houses the worst of the worst juvenile offenders in the state. That Mr Haslam and his entourage are wanting it closed down. Common sense is telling you right now Nashville what is going on with the younger generation. No one is wanting to step up to the plate and take notice. Does anyone there have any gonads. What the state of Tennessee needs is a Scared Straight Program. I understand that Taft is fully equipped with the the right educated people and the DCS Officers to handle these "Children". What is it going to take Nashville for sumone to drop these political differences that causes so much trouble and come together as people who are concerned about the future of the state instead of themselves. Nashville get out from behind your big desks and come on out in the streets of this state and really see whats going on with our youth. It's really said that you don't have a clue of whats going and you know what? If You don't wake up and smell the rose's it'll be to late.

Indeed, you are correct about Taft Youth Center in Pikeville. Commissioner O'Day has proposed to close it! And there are still things like this going on in our streets, communities, schools, etc. I have no idea how anyone could possibly think this is a good idea! It is ludicrous! There are teens out there that are comitting crimes every day; shooting, killing, raping, selling drugs, etc.! Taft Youth Center has the facility, programs and staff to take these kids in. One thing is for sure, the youth of today IS the future of this state and our country.. Think about that.. WE NEED TO KEEP TAFT YOUTH CENTER OPEN! The commissioner Ms. O'Day believes there is no difference between dependent neglect/foster care and Juvenile Justice kids.. I agree with Pikeville.. felonies would definitely be the first factor in seeing a difference between the two.

Is it coincidental that all these seemingly problem areas were long targeted for gentrification as late as ten, fifteen and even twenty years ago? The plan was to uproot the poor by any means necessary, toss them on the side of the road somewhere like trash or weeds in order to entice the suburbanites to return to the core of the city to live? Up property taxes so that even those poor who owned homes would either lose them or be forced to sell out and vacate their homes? They wouldn't be able to afford to live in the inner-city anyway. But gentrification doesn't always go as planned. So something more convincing was needed. FEAR CRIME Dangerous Black Youths roaming and lurking in every nook and corner. In a three year peroid WHYDC under Mr.Dawson sent twice the number of students to Taft than the other YDCs. The Represenitive had a few simple questions for her, and she nor Dep.Comm. Dawson had the answers. They said they would have them in 2 wks. From my understanding these questions were very basic, and anyone proposing to eliminate 203 jobs in an area that the unemployment rate is higher than the states average should have easily known. One or two things are going on here. Either Dawson is misleading his boss who has little to no experiance with JJ offenders for reasons unknown, or Comm.O'Day is setting the stage for large paydays when she leaves office. Apparently "PIKEVILLE" and most of YOU did not read the TFPress article that I did about closing Pikeville Juvenille Center. The Governer's rep O'Day stated that it made MORE sense to OPERATE 4 JD facilities in TN at almost 100% capacity than the CURRENT 5 JD facilities at 80% capacity. I have to AGREE with THAT concept as a TAXPAYER IN TN, especially IF the people can transfer to the NEW Prision so that no job s are lost in that area. And if the others facilities LATER become over crowded then they can reopen Pikeville. By the way I live on the Hixson side of Chattanooga and worked downtown for many years near where this shooting occured. I would NOT move down there even if they "gave" me one of those expensive condo's.

Ginagirl43...I'd say they have one year from today to get a job and a new place to live. One year. That should be enough ime for a determined person to get on their feet living close to free. So next Christmas lets bull doze all of those nice brick buildings.

Why are there not at least two CPD cruisers parked in front of the place at all times that Fathom is open for business?

In response to smokey

! Comm.O'day and Dep.Comm Dawson say they will save 4.4 million dollars if Taft closes. Here is some food for thought. In the first year alone the major maintenance requests from the other facilities will far exceed this number. The other facilities are not and have never been equipped for these type offenders. At Taft all 200+ rooms are equipped with institutional grade doors, furniture, and lighting. The reason for this is "Taft takes the bad ones" and have for decades. Fill Taft up and save 10 million dollars a year. Close Taft and spend more, place younger offenders and the public at risk. Taft is well built, well maintained, and clean. Oh yea they have the lowest return to custody percentage, and highest graduation rate. Can anyone say FILL TAFT UP!!!!!!

It's simple Haslam said it is better to have 4 facilities at 100% capacity than 5 at 80% capacity. Taft has over 130 rooms sitting vacant ready for someone to move into. If all this is about saving our tax dollars, close the lowest performing YDC and move their population to Taft. Considering they all have budgets ranging from 11.3 million to 12.1 million the savings would be at least 10 million a year for the taxpayers.

lookinfour said... 01centare...I'm lucky with 2 break ins in one year? That's some comforting logic you have there. I must have hit the lottery then since I moved from that HOOD and haven't had a single problem in over a decade.

As I'd guess the same can be said for those who moved from gang ridden white neighborhoods too. They were no longer attacked for being a different race, religion.

And 01centare, you don't have to reach back to a 2008 crime on Long Island and write that it occurred as if this past Monday. Very deceptive posting. We all can google all kinds of crimes to sensationalize a point. Very, very deceptive

How was it deceptive? Deceptive would have been if I'd specifically stated it all happened this past Monday. I didn't mention when. The fact is that it did all happend in 21St century race blind America!

Investigators William Salyers hmmm__Interesting. Promoted to investigator. That takes it all.

If it's labeled gang they can hit the federal government for more of your tax dollars to form more gang task force, give out promotions and pay raises. It's all a scam.

Nice outreach Christian club. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the events of black on black crime that happened that morning, the city needs to shutdown a questionable "christian" club that allows acts such as "team swag" to draw out our cities best and brightest for a night of "shutting the city down"(taken directly from the groups promotional messages).

The only positive thing that might happen out of this would be a shutdown. When you get that many uneducated youthful citizens together something stupid is going to happen. I'm sure I'm wrong as I should know this is a govt conspiracy...lol.

If you KNOW something 01 say it. But you never do. You make insinuations and claim that they are common knowledge but never give hard facts. You pick and choose your examples and have to go far outside Chattanooga to get them. You make a remark about an investigator like you know something but never say anything concrete. When you are called on it you respond with a personal attack instead of answering with facts.

There are more poor white parents than poor black parents. Poor white parents can keep their children out of danger why can black parents do the same? Times Free Press.. I would love to see the number of 25 or under white shooting victims compared to the number of 25 or under black shooting victims.

01centare - none of the incidents you cited were in Chattanooga. Its pretty telling that you had to find and go to a story in "New York’s Spanish-language daily El Diario/La Prensa".

01centare... What gentrification are you talking about? Would you be in favor of doing away with Section 8 and going back to dense public housing? Id venture an opinion that Wilcox at Tunnel would be a much safer area of town if there were no Section 8. As it used to be.

Fftspam....it's not worth it with 01centare. Nothing but generalizations, fluff, and random posts that usually mean nothing to the current thread. Never do his posts have anyone accept responsibility for the problem. This current incident is no different. His belief is even though 9 black youths and adults were shot it's the police fault, the communities fault, white peoples fault. Now he relates a burning cross on a black persons front yard as a reason for this mess. Crazy, in denial, and the mentality that continues the sad downfall of young black youth.

The fact that these participants were" black" have absolutely nothing to do with a solution. In Portland Or. they have a problem with skinheads. The solution to their problem is not "they are white" When youth are not raised right black or white, what do you expect the result to be a PHD ?. These youth can turn their lives around with the proper guidance and structure. No you can't reach all of them, but the majority can be taught responsibility and the real meaning of respect (NOT FEAR) Some will fall through the cracks and end up dead or in DOC, but the ones that do learn is the solution. If you notice the words taught and learn are being used. What if you had been taught by your parents to hate a person because of their skin color, or because of the color shirt they wore ? Where would you be? Some of these youth "will learn with a feather, others will learn with a sledgehammer." The important thing to the law abiding citizen is that they learn. There is a place that specializes in this type youth and has the highest success rates in the state. Even though they accept the problems the other YDCs don't want. It is one hour from Chattanooga in rural Bledsoe County. Here the youth can be removed from the toxic environment they came from. Life skills,A&D, anger control, moral reasoning, are taught with the vigilance of a war. The people take great pride in their success and great disappointment in their failure. Skin color or affiliation have nothing to do with it. Their recidivism rate ( return to custody) speaks for itself. The new administration in Nashville says there is no need for this place anymore. They say it is worth a 4 million dollar savings to close this teaching and learning environment. I say they are WRONG!!! If you are interested in crime in your neighborhood and the REAL TRUTH. Come to Bledsoe County Courthouse January 3rd at 5:00 pn (CST) and listen to the truth and the correct numbers about Taft Youth Center. This is the oldest employer in this area. They have rehabilitated the worst of the worst for over 90 years. Ask the mother who was in the Times Free Press article last week what she thinks about the way her son was returned. Ask Lookout Valley Football team, Silverdale Baptist, Notre Dame, Whitwell, Oakdale, Harriman what they think about the sportsmanship and respect that is shown every Friday night by the youth the others don't want or can't handle. These youth are the same youth who are shooting up the streets of Chattanooga. The difference is the youth involved in the shooting haven't been taught the life skills it takes to participate in a unsupervised Christmas Party. COME AND SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE!!! THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Pikeville is obviously trying to save his or her job by posting an irrelevant post here. Nothing in the rant has anything to do with topic. As do any of the post regarding the Taft Center. These posts I believe are nothing more than employes there trying to prove their 'worth' when they obviously can not come up with proof that the Taft Center actually has done anything other than being the oldest employer in the area.
