Chattanooga must pay a $476,400 civil penalty, on top of making $250 million in improvements to its sewer system and implementing an $800,000 green infrastructure plan and stream restoration project in the next 15 years.
The agreement, totaling about 251.3 million, will accelerate city fixes on a sewer system that has dumped more than 354 million gallons of raw sewage into the Tennessee River since 2005, according to court documents.
The settlement was announced today by the city, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice, Tennessee and the Tennessee Clean Water Network.
