Tom Baird runner-up in state match play and other sports stories

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- Signal Mountain's Tom Baird lost to Germantown's Larry Dupree, 2 and 1, in the senior division final Friday of the Tennessee Match Play Championship, and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Steven Fox of Hendersonville and Honors Course member Tim Jackson of Germantown were 1-up victims in the semifinals of the main amateur division. Fox, the 2011 champion, fell to John Luke Tyner of Collierville; Jackson lost to Bailey Childress of Memphis.

• ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- New UTC golfer Michael Monroe from Franklin, Tenn., finished tied for 23rd at 288 with a closing 76 Friday in the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions at the Capital City club. Monroe finished 17 shots behind tournament champion Matthew NeSmith of North Augusta, S.C.

Basketball

• Chattanooga State basketball coach Jay Price is delighted to sign recent Ringgold High School graduate Nick Scott this late in the recruiting process. Scott signed Friday after having discussions with Lee University, Reinhardt, Shorter, Berry and 2012 Georgia junior college champion Gordon College. He had been invited to walk on at UTC, and Mocs coach John Shulman also recommended him to Price. "We were in desperate need of a 2-guard, and Nick can shoot the ball," Price said. "Coach Shulman and I have been friends for a long time, and he really endorsed Nick as not only a good player but a good kid who will do a good job in the classroom as well as on the court." Ringgold coach Greg Elkins vouched out for that and said Scott "has an unbelievable mind for the game -- he's instinctive. He may not be as quick as some other people, but his mentality and anticipation make up for that. I'm biased, but I think he can create his own shot at the highest level. He's not only a great shooter, but this year he drove to the basket more and got to the free-throw line." Scott finished just a few points short of 1,600 for his Ringgold career -- three years as a starter -- and also had 378 steals. He was the Chattanooga area's No. 2 in that category the last two seasons and averaged 20.1 points a game as a senior. Elkins said he thought Scott winding up with Chattanooga State "works out for the best." Price just returned from working with the United States junior national team in Colorado Springs, and Scott was attracted to the coach's past success and up-tempo style. He said he also liked the chance of opening new options at four-year schools in two years.

Softball

• OKLAHOMA CITY -- UTC softball players Vivian Morimoto and Simone "Ninjja" Suetsugu each had good days for Brazil on Friday in the World Cup of Softball. Morimoto hit a two run home run and Suetsugu went 2-for-3 and scored twice in a 4-3 loss to the Netherlands. Lady Mocs sophomore Nicole Osterman, playing for Puerto Rico, also homered at the World Cup. Her two-run shot accounted for Puerto Rico's only runs in a 7-2 loss to the Netherlands.

Football

• The 2011 UTC football media guide recently was awarded second place by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America in competition with other NCAA Football Championship Series programs. The 136-page book on the Mocs was produced by the UTC athletics communications and media relations office. It was written and edited by Dr. Jay Blackman with assistance from Anne Wehunt, Jim Horton, Nate Blythe, Owen Seaton and Pam Henry. "It is always an honor to get recognized by your peers on a national level," UTC athletic director Rick Hart said, "and I am proud of the work of our Communications and Media Relations Department."

Roller Derby

• The Chattanooga Roller Girls (3-1) will host the Vette City Vixens at 7 tonight in flat-track roller derby at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The game will be televised locally on WFLI. Tickets cost $10 online or $12 at the door -- or $8 with a valid military ID or $5 for ages 6-12.
