The W Road will be closed today starting at 8 a.m. near the base of the road, close to Mountain Creek Road.
Commuters who normally come down the W Road will have to take Taft Highway to come off Signal Mountain.
The road is expected to be closed all day today; it is not expected to be open in time for evening rush hour.
The highway department anticipates finishing the project before dusk today, enabling regular traffic patterns to resume Wednesday.
